I think through the Massachusetts AI Coalition, he is getting meaningfully engaged in community-oriented ways that are very productive for the community. … I do think the general kind of Eeyore sentiment, which is not reflected in national data, pervades beyond just tech. The number of people who asked me, as I started this job, (was) “Are we in a recession?” Only for the data to show we were the highest-performing growth state in the country last year. For 2025, Massachusetts had the highest GDP growth in the country.
My former partner, Amanda (Herson, from the venture capital firm Founder Collective), comes up from New York, and listens to us wring our hands here, and she’s like, “Oh my god, you have no idea how good you have it.”
If, at the end of the day, it cost nothing that we were so self‑critical, I wouldn’t worry. (But) we want the talent to be here, and I don’t think the talent is going to want … to be here when constantly the leaders in the community are questioning why we’re not doing better.
You once asked me, Scott, “Don’t you want to be (the) number one (innovation ecosystem)?” And I would say, of course, we want to be number one, but we need to be very proud of how high we’ve performed. We rival every other ecosystem in the world, outside of Silicon Valley and China.
